Walnut Creek

Friday’s show at Red House was both surprisingly fun and peculiar. Though we still rehearse in Walnut Creek, there is nothing about it that really feels like my neighborhood anymore. Every time I come back, I feel as though the town has changed more than I am prepared for. Stores come, stores go, and more beige apartment buildings are developed. I’ve assigned some type of romantic significance to parking lots and convenience stores. When I come back and notice the change, I feel that Walnut Creek loses its identity and just starts to feel like a shopping mall. I feel like I grew up in a shopping mall.

I know that sounds bleak and honestly, this wasn’t a realization that was entirely brought on by performing in Walnut Creek. In fact, I think that playing out there actually provided me with some type of closure and willingness to accept that this is indeed what happens to “the old neighborhood.” It changes.

A month or so ago, there was a “funny” YouTube video that ended up being forwarded to me. It was “funny” because it featured an adult man crying. I didn’t find it to be funny at all. In fact, I was completely moved by it. He is crying because his old neighborhood library is being torn down. It had been there his whole life. I couldn’t believe that someone would laugh about this. Sure, maybe he sounds ridiculous as his voice cracks and he swears but so what? Everyone sounds silly when they cry. No one cries like they do in Hollywood movies. I bet that if more people cared this much about the libraries in their neighborhoods, the world would be a different place.

All I’m really saying is that I relate. When I see parts of Walnut Creek go I feel a sense of loss. But, last Friday for me did not evoke a sense or mourning. It was a celebration of my time in Walnut Creek. It’s no longer this place I have to make the best of. It’s someone else’s turn.

“IN WONDER” MUSIC VIDEO

About a year ago, we began shooting a music video for “In Wonder” with our good friend, Taylor Wansley. Due to us parting ways with former drummer, Rachel Travers and an array of other issues – the video was put on hold. Now, Taylor has completed the video and it’s available for you to see. Enjoy “In Wonder” shot, cut, and directed by Taylor Wansley.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING OUR HAITI BENEFIT A HUGE SUCCESS.

We would like to thank each and every one of you for attending the benefit show we played February 5th at Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco. With over 200 people in attendance, we were able to raise $900 for Doctors Without Borders and their efforts in Haiti. Thanks to Stomacher and Mata Leon for participating in the benefit as well!

In other news, we have some upcoming shows. Including, our first all ages show in over six months at the Red House in Walnut Creek on March 5th. Additionally, we’ll be playing a free house party show in Los Angeles’s Silverlake district on Saturday, February 27th.

Finally, we are in the last phase of production for the Three Words EP! It’s been a long time coming but all six tracks will be completely tracked by the end of the week. Stay tuned as we begin to unveil the new songs, announce the release date, tour dates, and details regarding the release party!

Thank you kindly for all of your continued support.

Hey, What are you listening to right now?

Hello, to everyone out there. This is my [Sean] first post on the site, and it’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to do so. Up until today/this afternoon, I’ve been entrenched in studying for finals. I’ve got three down, just one more to go. I’ve been up til 4 am multiple nights, going over the finer points of the English language and medieval literature. It’s been nuts to say the least.
I thought I’d share with you what’s been keeping me sane this past week and a half. No, it’s not adderall, it’s a copy of Beach House’s unreleased album, Teen Dream, and it’s pretty fudgeing sweet. I used to say that Beach House was one of those bands that I enjoyed listening to but felt in someways they were a “one trick pony.” All of their songs were in some way spooky and romantic at the same time, the production on the first album was generally the same for every track, and the song writing was catchy but not altogether mind blowing. That was just the facts of life. I still appreciated what they were doing nonetheless. In light of hearing this third album though, I must say the band has reached a new level of songwriting and musicianship. It’s so damn catchy and pop-sensible. Some of the “spookiness” is missing, but in it’s place is stronger, fuller sounding songs. I am altogether pleased.
For a band with a sound like Beach House’s, follow up albums can be difficult to navigate. With such a distinct sound, it’s hard to not hash out the same material as the debut while trying to maintain the sound that people like about your music. Teen Dream is everything I could have hoped for. A departure without leaving everything behind.
It should be addressed that though I illegally obtained an unreleased copy, I did pre-order the album on vinyl. So in someways my money has already gone to the album. Regardless, try not to steal music.
With that said, I love this album. Check out performances of the new songs on the youtuber.

The Bay Bridged Recording Grant / Spirit Animals

We sincerely apologize for the lack of recent updates. Fortunately, it’s for good reason. Last we spoke, we were involved in Live 105’s Not So Silent Night Local Band Competition. We did not advance to the top 5. However, we sincerely appreciate everyone going out of his or her way to vote.

Some of you may have tuned in a few Sunday nights ago on Justin.TV where we did a live webcast. We normally don’t fancy that type of thing but we found it to be quite enjoyable. I believe we may start doing a monthly webcast where we’ll welcome questions and comments. To watch our last broadcast and for future reference, our Justin.TV profile can be found here-

Moving along, we were recently awarded the Bay Bridged Recording Grant. The grant is for three days of studio time at John Vanderslice’s prestigious recording studio, Tiny Telephone in San Francisco. Tiny Telephone has had an amazing clientele over the years. Including, but not limited to, Death Cab For Cutie, Deerhoof, Rogue Wave, Spoon, and Two Gallants. We are very excited about this for a number of reasons.

1. Because of it’s vast collection of analog gear, impressive roster of clients and house engineers, we have always wanted to record at this studio!
2. Because of the grant, we are able to record a new song that we wouldn’t have otherwise been able to do for the Three Words EP.
3. Scott McDowell, the engineer we will be working with has done some amazing work. Most of which can be heard here – http://slowchildren.com/

To prepare ourselves for these upcoming sessions, we’ve been rehearsing rigorously and demo recording the new song (currently untitled) in our unbelievably cold practice space in Walnut Creek. We’re really proud of it and think you’ll understand why once you hear it…

In more member specific news, Nick Clark (aka Dick Shark) has recently moved into a new apartment in Berkeley and off the floor of mine. He’s also gotten himself a pretty sharp new haircut, too. Nick’s place happens to be right around the corner from Sean “Moon Dragon” Gaffney’s sweet pad. So, as you can imagine, they’ve been spending some real quality time together.

Charlie Koliha aka Funky Down Preston has been living life to the fullest – at Nick’s place. In fact, I’ve never been to Nick’s place without Charlie randomly dropping by. Also, we’ve been talking a lot about people’s spirit animals lately. We came up with a Camel for Charlie. You be the judge:

That about wraps up this episode of “Rob updates the Loveless site cause the rest of the band is too lazy.”

Till next time!
